Drake apare din nou pe coperta GQ, iar in interiorul editiei americane gasim un interviu cu rapperul care se pregateste de lansarea unui nou album. Drake vorbeste despre muzica sa, bani si, evident, despre conflictul sau cu Chris Brown.

Drake e unul dintre acei rapperi despre care se poate spune ca e classy – nu e din cartier, nu a petrecut timp in puscarie si nici nu a vandut droguri ca Jay- Z pentru a se intretine. Ba chiar a avut o viata mai lipsita de griji, reusind in adolescenta sa joace intr-un serial si sa isi castige banii cinstit, in final ajutand-o pe mama sa isi rezolve o problema de sanatate.

Drake e genul de rapper care nu se va sfii sa isi puna inima si sentimentele pe tava, fata de alti colegi ai sai. Mai mult, cativa dintre ei i-au aruncat replici taioase:counterfeit rapper (Ludacris), a fuckin\’ piece of shit  (DMX) sau a straight pussy (Lil\’ Kim), in timp ce Chris Brown i-a zis sa come out of the closet\’.

Concluzia lui Drake la toate aceste reactii? You notice they don\’t criticize the music itself, though. I\’m okay with that. Deci, atata timp cat nimeni nu se ia de muzica lui, viata merge mai departe.

Cat despre conflictul sau cu Chris Brown, el prefera sa nu spuna prea multe. Nu vrea sa isi asocieze numele cu el si nici nu vrea ca presa sa spuna ca doi rapperi se bat pentru o femeie. Daca ar putea, ar sta de vorba cu Brown, insa nu se stie ce ar iesi dintr-o asemenea intalnire.

I hear he has everything he could want now. I don\’t want my name to be synonymous with that guy’s name. I really don\’t. I wish we could sit down, just like you and me are right now, and talk it out man-to-man. But that’s not going to happen. I\’m not confrontational, but if someone challenges, I\’m not going to back down.

It’s embarrassing, the amount of media coverage. Two rappers fighting over the woman. He’s not even a rapper, but still, it’s the last way you want your name out there. It distracts from the music. But he’s made me the enemy, and that’s the way it’s gonna stay, I guess.

Drake continua sa faca muzica buna si intelege ca publicul are nevoie de un carlig, de ceva de care sa se lege si care sa le ramana in minte, sa fredoneze odata cu artistul de pe scena.

I fully accept I\’m an arena-touring act. When I\’m writing, I\’m thinking about how the songs are going to play live. Fifty bars of rap don\’t translate onstage. No matter how potent the music, you lose the crowd. They want a hook; they want to sing your stuff back to you. That’s why on this album I\’ve been trying to condense my thoughts to sixteen-bar verses. There’s something to be said for spacing out the lines, to infiltrate people’s minds.

Rapperul din Toronto, despre care Common spune ca e un nimic -You so black and white, trying to live a nigga’s life… / You ain\’t wet nobody, nigga, you Canada dry, a ajuns exact unde si-a dorit. Si-a propus ca pana la 25 de ani sa aiba in conturi peste 25 de milioane de dolari, iar pana la 29 vrea sa faca de o suta de ori mai mult. Tinand cont de succesul pieselor sale – de la ultimul single Started from the Bottom, colaborarile cu Rihanna – What’s My Name si Take Care, pana la piese ca Find Your Love, departe de stilul obisnuit al unui rapper.
