De vorba cu… Fedde Le Grand (interviu Monden.info)

Fedde Le Grand – va spune ceva numele acesta? 😛 „Put your hands up for Detroit„, „Let me think about it„, „The Creeps” sunt numai cateva dintre hiturile sale.

1. Monden.info: What is your take on European dance music? What is the tendency towards its evolving?
Fedde Le Grand: I think European dance music is in a really healthy position at the moment, there’s a lot going on creatively with many different sounds from the growing Dutch sound to the UK scene, the French house music, across to Eastern Europe – there are so many artists who are putting out really inspiring music right now and in turn giving other artists new ideas – it’s a great time for European dance music, definitely.

2. Monden.info: Do you know any Romanian artists?
FLG: I know of Inna – how could you not! :)) She’s doing very well right now in the mainstream charts and she’s a fantastic ambassador for Romania.

3. Monden.info: Would you be open to remix a Romanian artist’s track if it were good enough?
FLG: Definitely, I’m open to remixing any artist if it’s a sound that I like and I think I can do something with their music. Of course a lot of the time it comes down to my schedule and how busy I am – this summer I’m touring so much that I won’t have much time to get into the studio.

4. Monden.info: What is your main source of inspiration for your music?
FLG: It can be anything really, from a beat I’ve had going round in my head, to a tune or some lyrics that I’ve written. Or I might hear something new on the dance floor and that inspires me, or a musical movement that I grew up with that I love and I want to do my own take on it. There’s not one thing that I could really say inspires me because there’s so much out there.

5. Monden.info: What sound would you like to experiment with, other than dance music?
FLG: I love funk, the funkier the better! When I was growing up I was a massive fan of the P-Funk sound, with George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. The way they crafted their sound has always been a massive factor in the more ‘housey’ side of the things I do. I also love pop music, I think it’s very under-rated and actually one of the hardest styles of music to produce. I’d love to work behind the scenes as a producer for some of the big guys. For me the best male vocalist out there right now is Justin Timberlake, I think his voice is tremendous and I’d love to work with him.

6. Monden.info: A question asked by the fans: do you have a favorite track and does it make you feel like you’re in Heaven when you listen to it?
FLG: One of the last tracks that made me feel more or less in heaven was Aloe Blacc, I need a Dollar.

7. Monden.info: Why didn’t you keep your full name and resorted to calling yourself Fedde Le Grand for your technohouse and minimal tracks? The fans say that they find so many different sides of you in your tracks.
FLG: That’s the reason why I decided to have two names. There’s a lot of my music that is more vocal and uplifting, and that’s the music that I produce as Fedde le Grand. The more underground, stripped down beats I produce as F.L.G so that people know what they’ll be getting. I think it just helps to allow me to produce in as many varied styles as I want to, but at the same time it doesn’t confuse people who might expect one style of music and then the track turns out to be another.

8. Monden.info: What is it in Holland that gives birth to such talented Djs?
FLG: Everybody asks this 🙂 I don’t know why so many talented DJs come from Holland but there is definitely a great movement out here, and a lot of extremely talented DJs and producers who are either established like myself, Armin, Tiesto and Laidback Luke, to younger artists like Bart B More. I think there’s a healthy amount of clubs and bars in the Netherlands where DJs can learn their craft, a lot of people seem to be looking at our country for new talent as well so maybe that’s why we get picked up so much.

9. Monden.info: Tiesto and Armin are a bit like representative brands for Holland. Have you ever thought of becoming one yourself? Would you like to be number one on the DjMag top?
FLG: To be honest with you, I’m more interested in doing what I want musically rather than fitting into a certain style just so I can sell myself. Don’t get me wrong, it would be amazing to constantly play to huge arenas, but I also like the smaller, more underground clubs as well where you’re right there in the crowd and having a really intimate relationship with the dance floor. For me, it doesn’t matter as long as I can continue to make music that I’m happy with.

10. Monden.info: Would you like to work with Armin on Tiesto on a track or are your styles too different to be reconciled?
FLG: I’ve actually just finished a track with Tiesto so there you go! :)) Just because someone has a different production style to you generally doesn’t mean you should be afraid of getting in the studio with them – sometimes that’s when the most interesting and unexpected tracks come from.

11. Monden.info: How are the fans reacting to you new single, New Life, in collaboration with Funkerman & Dany P-Jazz? What was it like to work with them?
FLG: Everybody seems to really like it so that’s great for us all! We had some fantastic remixes done this year for the 2010 package and of course the video featuring some very hot girls ? You can check it out at www.youtube.com/flgtv.

12. Monden.info: How do you feel about playing at the Peninsula Festival this year, in Targu Mures? You’re sharing the day with some very, very interesting names.
FLG: I can honestly say that it’s probably the most varied festival that I’ve ever played at! There are a lot of different styles there but that should make it interesting, for me and the fans who are going there too. I’m on the same day as The Rasmus and the Gorillaz Sound System (which I’m very excited to see!) then the day after you’ve got Above & Beyond and Korn! But they do say variety is the spice of life…

13. Monden.info: Are you excited about playing for the Romanian public again? How is it different from the public from other parts of the world?
FLG: Yes, I’m really looking forward to it. I wouldn’t say Romania is any more different than other European countries, I think the people know their music, they know what they like and they give off a massive amount of energy when they get into your set.

14. Monden.info: Your website looks phenomenal and I’ve seen you’re involved with social media too. Do you tweet a lot? What kind of input do you get from your fans on Twitter and on Facebook?
FLG: We put a lot of work into the site and worked with some great guys who really know what they’re doing when it comes to building an online community. It was really important for me to have a website that gave something back to the fans rather than just a lot of news, pictures of me etc. It really is something special, fans can chat to each other, my team and me when I’m online, they can uploads their own productions which community members can listen to and rate – we even give members a hosting page for their music so they can share it across other social sites such as Facebook and MySpace. And yes, I do Twitter a lot, I’m kind of addicted! :)) I get a lot of feedback on Facebook and Twitter, but also on my site too, it’s a happy balance :)) . If you want to join the Fedde online community, just go to www.feddelegrand.com – it’s really easy to join. You can also check out my YouTube TV channel, I work with a great guy called Charlie who makes some amazing on-the-road videos for me, plus you can see all my music videos too.

15. Monden.info: A shout out to your Romanian fans, because they’re not a small community.
FLG: I’d like to say a massive hello to everyone in Romania, I’m really excited to come and see you guys and rip it up at the Peninsula Festival, I’ve got some huge tunes in my box so make sure you’re down at the front to say hello!
