Mai e putin pana la B\’estfest Summer Camp cand ii vom putea asculta live si in premiera pe cei de la Garbage. Asa ca am pregatit un scurt interviu cu formatia care a dominat sfarsitul anilor 90 – inceputul anilor 2000 cu piese precum Androginy, Only Happy When It Rains sau I Think I\’m Paranoid.

Shirley Manson este, de departe, una dintre cele mai carismatice figuri din zona rockului, recunoscuta pentru atitudinea rebela, stilul direct de a fi si mai presus de toate vocea ei cu un timbru distinct. Dupa o pauza de cativa ani trupa s-a intors pe piata muzicala cu un nou album, Not Your Kind of People, care a fost foarte bine primit de critici si aduce a soundul cu care Garbage ne-a obisnuit de-a lungul anilor.

You were one of the greatest bands in the 2000s yet you decided to take a break and then returned with smashing hits. Are these moments necessary for a band to get the creative juices flowing again?

Butch: We took 7 years off because we were burned out from 4 albums and 4 long tours. But the 7 year break revitalized us, made us want to make music again. We didn\’t try to write hits, we wanted to make a complete album, something you can listen to over and over again and get a new experience each time.

Looking back at your first rehearsals would you have ever imagined the success the band eventually had?

Butch: No, we are really surprised by the success, and the long career we\’ve had! We are damn lucky!

I read that during the recording of Beautiful Garbage, Shirley had a blog. How do you feel about the on-line, do you see it a means of promoting the band and keeping up with the fan base?

Shirley: Actually it is true that I was one of the first musicians to publish an online blog. I did it for fun and because we were so fascinated by the new technology. Now I view social media as a convenient method to reach our fans directly without the need of a third party. It is also a way for us to address inaccurate reports written about us in the printed press for an example or to announce dates etc. Overall the internet has destroyed the mystique of bands but in it’s place has introduced a new relationship between musicians and their fans which allows the sharing of information,artwork, photography, experience, emotions and opinions.

Do you feel the new album brings back the sound of the first releases as the press finds it?

Butch: Yes, I think NYKOP feels vibe-wise a lot like our debut album. It has a lot of the same elements, fuzzy guitars, big beats, trashy drums, weird noises, electronica, atmospherics, and hooky melodies. And an energy that feels the same to me.

Ati fost una dintre marile trupe ale anilor 2000 si totusi ati decis sa luati o puaza dupa care v-ati intors cu alte hituri. Genul acesta de pauze sunt necesare pentru a avea din nou inspiratie si a compune?

Am luat o pauza de 7 ani pentru ca eram epuizati dupa 4 albume lansate si 4 turnee foarte lungi. Dar cei sapte ani ne-au revitalizat, ne-au facut sa ne dorim sa facem muzica din nou. Nu am incercat neaparat sa compunem, am vrut sa realizam un album complet, ceva ce poti asculta din nou si din nou si sa ai de fiecare data o noua experienta.

Uitandu-va inapoi in timp, la primele repetitii pe care le-ati avut impreuna, v-ati fi imaginat succesul pe care l-a avut in final trupa?

Nu, suntem de-a dreptul surprinsi de success si de longevitatea carierei noastre. Suntem al naibii de norocosi.

Am citit ca in timpul inregistrarilor pentru Beautiful Garbage Shirley a avut un blog. Ce parere aveti despre online, il vedeti ca pe o forma de promovarea a trupei si a tine pasul cu fanii?

De fapt e adevarat ca eu am fost unul dintre primii muzicieni care sa aiba un blog online. Am facut-o din amuzament si pentru ca eram atat de fascinate de noua tehnologie. Acum vad social media ca pe o metoda convenabila de a ajunge direct la fanii nostri, fara intermediari. Este, de asemenea, o metoda buna de a raspunde stirilor false din presa sau pentru a anunta datele concertelor etc. Per ansamblu internetul a distrus misterul din spatele trupelor, dar a introdus o noua relatie intre muzicieni si fanii lor care le permite sa impartaseasca informatii, poze, experienta, emotii si parari.

Vi se pare ca noul album seamana cu soundul primelor materiale lansate, asa cum zice presa?

Da, cred ca NYKOP are un vibe asemanator albumului de debut. Are o multime de elemente asemanatoare, chitare, beaturi puternice, sunete ciudate, electronica, atmospheric si melodii care sa te prinda. Iar energia imi pare aceeasi.
